This spreadsheet is for anyone juggling more than one debt who wants a clear plan to become debt-free as efficiently as possible. Whether you're dealing with credit cards, personal loans, auto loans, or a mix of everything, this gives you an exact strategy and timeline.

It's especially valuable for anyone unsure whether avalanche or snowball suits them better, people deciding how to allocate extra money toward debt each month, and anyone who wants the motivation of seeing a concrete debt-free date rather than an open-ended balance.

Step 1 — List Every Debt

On the Debts sheet, enter each debt's name, type, balance, interest rate (APR) and minimum monthly payment. You can enter up to 15 debts — credit cards, loans, or anything else with a balance and interest rate.

Step 2 — Choose Your Strategy

Both strategies calculate automatically. Avalanche prioritizes your highest interest rate debt first, which minimizes total interest paid over time. Snowball prioritizes your smallest balance first, which clears individual debts faster and can help build momentum and motivation. Use the View Strategy setting to choose which plan the Payment Schedule displays.

Step 3 — Add Any Extra Payment

On the Settings sheet, enter your plan start date and any extra amount you can put toward debt each month on top of your minimum payments. The spreadsheet automatically applies this extra amount to your priority debt under both strategies.

Step 4 — Review Your Payoff Timeline

The Dashboard and Payment Schedule show your plan month by month, along with your debt-free date and total interest paid. Change the Extra Monthly Payment on the Settings sheet to see the real impact of paying more — the schedule plans up to 180 months (15 years).

Step 5 — Compare Avalanche vs Snowball

Use the strategy comparison view to see your debt-free date and total interest under both approaches side by side. Avalanche almost always saves more in total interest, but snowball can be worth it if the quick wins keep you motivated to stick with the plan.

Tips for Paying Off Debt Faster

Any extra payment helps, but consistency matters more than size — a smaller extra payment made every month outperforms an occasional large one. If you're tempted to give up partway through, snowball's early wins can be the difference between sticking with a plan and abandoning it, even if avalanche is mathematically optimal.

What's the difference between avalanche and snowball?

Avalanche pays off your highest interest rate debt first, minimizing total interest paid. Snowball pays off your smallest balance first, giving you quicker wins that can help with motivation. The spreadsheet calculates both so you can pick what works for you.

How many debts can I track?

Up to 15 debts. List every credit card, loan, or other balance on the Debts sheet — the strategy sheets, comparison and payment schedule recalculate automatically. The schedule plans up to 180 months (15 years).

Does this work with Google Sheets?

Yes. Upload the .xlsx file to Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets. All formulas, schedules, and charts work in Google Sheets at no extra cost (minor formatting differences may appear compared with Excel).
