This spreadsheet is for anyone who wants a simple, structured way to manage their monthly spending without building a complex budget from scratch. The 50/30/20 rule gives you an immediate starting framework that works for most income levels, and this planner applies it automatically so you can focus on the numbers instead of the setup.

It's especially valuable for people who've tried budgeting before but found it too complicated to maintain, anyone who earns a regular income and wants a clear monthly snapshot, and people who want to see immediately whether their spending is genuinely on track without doing any manual calculations.

Step 1 — Enter Your Monthly Income

Enter your net monthly income — what actually lands in your account after tax. The spreadsheet immediately calculates your 50/30/20 budget targets: $2,500 for Needs, $1,500 for Wants, and $1,000 for Savings on a $5,000 income, for example.

Step 2 — Customise Your Categories

Rename any category and set your own monthly budget for each one — useful if you live in a high-cost-of-living city, have high debt obligations, or a different savings goal. The 50/30/20 targets themselves stay fixed, and the Variance rows show whether your category budgets add up to more or less than each target.

Step 3 — Log Your Actual Spending

Throughout the month, enter your actual spending in each category. The budget vs actual comparison updates in real time, and colour-coded alerts immediately flag any category that's running over budget so you can course-correct before the month ends.

Step 4 — Review Your Monthly Summary

At the end of each month, your dashboard shows a complete snapshot: budget vs actual for all three categories, your net surplus or deficit, and which categories stayed on track. Use this to identify patterns in your spending over time.

Step 5 — Track the Full Year

The 12-month overview shows your budget performance across every month, making it easy to spot months where you consistently overspend on Wants or underfund Savings — the two most common patterns the 50/30/20 framework reveals.

Tips for Sticking to a 50/30/20 Budget

The most common issue is that Needs are underestimated at first — rent, insurance, loan minimums, and groceries often total more than 50% for people in high-cost areas. If that's your situation, set your Needs category budgets to match reality and check the Variance row to see how far over the 50% target they are — then trim Wants first before reducing Savings, since the savings category is the one most likely to be skipped entirely if it's underfunded.

Can I change the 50/30/20 percentages?

The 50/30/20 split itself is fixed — your targets always calculate as 50% Needs, 30% Wants and 20% Savings/Debt of your take-home income. What you can customise is every category inside each bucket: rename it and set your own monthly budget, and the Variance rows show how your budgets compare with each target.

Does it track spending across sub-categories?

Yes. Each bucket has its own list of categories (8 Needs, 8 Wants and 4 Savings/Debt) and you enter your actual spend against each one on the Needs, Wants and Savings & Debt tracker sheets, so you can see exactly which categories are going over budget.

Does this work with Google Sheets?

Yes. Upload the .xlsx file to Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets. All formulas, alerts, and the 12-month overview are fully compatible at no extra cost.
